The Condom Review... Review

This post originally appeared on a previous iteration of this site on October 12th, 2013. It has been reposted here for posterity.

A little while back, the wonderful folks at Lucky Bloke asked me if I wanted to review one or more of their awesome sampler packs- but due to my sensitivities, I asked for a customized sampler of latex free and vegan condoms and their selection of glycerine and paraben free lubricants.

There are a lot of options out there when it comes to condoms and other safer sex barriers; latex, non-latex, “female” or “receiving” condoms, textured, flavored, stimulating, a gamut of different sizes, shapes, colors, and thinnesses- the options are much more diverse than your typical Trojan, Durex, and Lifestyles, and that’s not even touching on dental dams, gloves, and finger cots.

The fact of the matter is that all condoms are tested to the same standard, and they are all just as safe as the others – but different brands and styles feel different, and one might be more what you prefer than another. Lubricant is similarly complex, with a variety of base ingredients that all work differently and feel different, and that’s not even getting into stimulating or flavored lubricants. What is the safer sex desirous person to do?

While tracking down, buying, and trying boxes and bottles of lube can be not only arduous but expensive and time consuming, trying single condoms and ‘sample’ packs of lube is a bit more conservative and allows you to try out more things in smaller quantities at a lower price, which helps when navigating the sheer mass of condoms and lube available on the market today.

The reason I like the condom review is that they are chock full of all sorts of samplers- from common and rare brands, made of all sorts of materials in a plethora of shapes and sizes. Their lube offerings are equally as diverse as their condom and barrier selection, and everything is broken down into easy-to-navigate categories- this way, you can mix and match your own or try one of their themed sampler packs.

Aside from helping find the correct fit and style for you, this also adds some fun to safer sex practices- “hey, which of these should we try tonight?” adds an element of surprise and discovery, rather than the same old same old routine. You could also have a bunch of different textures, shapes, and flavors in a hat and pick one out at random to decide what you want to do that night; you’re only limited by your imagination.
