Fetish v. Fashion is a series posted every other Friday. The purpose of this series is to highlight the similarities and interplay of Fetish and Fashion: how they feed off of and inspire one another. Check out the category for more like this.
50's household is a unique amalgamation of different fetishes: it's usually a power play scenario or roleplay that features domesticity and strict dominance and submission along the lines of the 1950's American Family Ideal. It also focuses heavily on wardrobe and even interior design - many 1950's households go all out, with intricate clothing and vintage inspired homes with a lot of gorgeous mid-century furniture. I always wonder how many pinup/retro lifestyle enthusiasts are also into the 50's household fetish. I'm sure a lot are, or have at least experimented with it - I would if I already had the setup.
50's household can be a lot of things - generally, it is a power play scenario where one partner is the "housewife" and the other is the "husband" and they play out those roles. I'm sure that there have also been 50's household scenes where age players are involved as the "children" in and puppies as the "dog" - because what perfect family is complete without their 2.6 children and the dog in the yard? Excuse me while I imagine this.
These scenes often involve a strict gender binary, l with a woman as the housewife and a man as the husband, but it can be played with - there have definitely been 50's household scenarios where a cis man may crossdress as the housewife, or a masculine woman may play the husband. The roles are masculine and feminine by nature, but that does not mean that the people in them need to be masculine or feminine when they are not in that role, or that those roles can't be genderfucked.
This fetish is also the kind of thing that people live 24/7 - and it's one that you can actually get away with, for the most part, in public to some extent. It's easier to wear vintage clothing in public than it is to be in some other forms of fetishwear, at least if your perceived gender aligns with what you're wearing.
It is really unsurprising to me that the 50's household trope has infiltrated many peoples' sexual consciousness; the nuclear family with the hard working husband and subservient, service-oriented housewife is all over media that we as a society have consumed from a young age. It is one of the most prevalent forms of a power exchange relationship that we're exposed to, and it is often inherently sexualized, whether consciously or not.
